Extension As Urban Policy Advisors

Posted by Lendl Meyer | August 27, 2015

When working in metropolitan communities, Extension professionals can often have a greater impact by working at the policy, systems and environment level.  This is often an area that Extension faculty and staff are not trained to work at.

During this workshop, attendees will:

  1. Understand how policy is made at the local, regional and state levels
  2. Learn about the relationship between programs and policy and how policy impacts system change

This workshop is geared for Cooperative Extension professionals working in metropolitan communities. We hope that by the end of this workshop you will:

  • Understand the relevant role of extension professionals to influence policy
  • Increase your understanding of how government systems are organized and how policy is made at the local, regional and state levels
  • Gain a deeper understanding of what and how “policy tools” inform policy makers
  • Learn about the relationship between programs and policy and how policy impacts system change
  • Opportunity to network with colleagues who share your interest in working at the policy level
